Little Shepherd VBT Results Week 2
I hadn't planned to talk about this, because I've learned over the years that watching your Amazon stats can make you crazy. I went out to Amazon to check stock of Little Shepherd and discovered that it is right now listed as #45 in the Top 100 best selling books in the Large Print, Children's Books category.
In addition, my stats, which before my virtual book tour were well over one million are now listed at 154,093. Each time I've toured with Little Shepherd I've gotten good results. Now, you're probably thinking it's because I'm in the business; but I can honestly say I'm not doing anything different than what I would do for any of my clients.
What I do believe makes a difference is that I promote each tour stop here and on my social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter) and sporadically on Google+ and Pinterest. That means, I'm reaching Pump Up Your Book's contacts with news about my book, plus my followers, and all of those who follow the blogs who are hosting me. I can type my name into Google or my name and the book's title into Google and come up with results that include many of my tour stops.
Virtual book tours provide great exposure for authors. I'm seeing that firsthand.

Virtual Book Tour Updates
It's amazing how quickly a plan can come together. I just started working on my Little Shepherd virtual book tour this week and I already have more than 20 stops. As London Tipton would say, "Yay me!"
I'm also beginning to put together a tour for A Christmas Kindness. This is my second book, which came out last December under my pen name, C.C. Gevry. After much consideration, I'm going to have it reprinted under my real name. Originally, I wanted to keep my secular projects separate from my faith-based ones, but I decided all my message-driven fiction should be together. It's a costly mistake, but I'm glad it will get corrected.
If you would like to host either book, contact me via email at ccmal(at)charter(dot)net.
Thanks for your support.

Pump Up Your Book's 5th Anniversary Hoedown Giveaway!
Pump Up Your Book is celebrating 5 years and you get all the presents!
It's hard to believe Pump Up Your Book opened its virtual doors 5 years ago. I swear I just started working with our founder, Dorothy. But the calendar doesn't lie. My first clients--I'll never forget them--were authors Darrell Bain and Maureen Fisher. I still receive Darrell's newsletter, and Maureen's latest release, Fur Ball Fever, is on my Kindle waiting for me.
There's something special about first clients. You remember them. You follow their careers. You think how you might have run their tours differently now that you have all this experience. In 2007, virtual book tours were a new vehicle of book promotion. That's changed now. Blogging has exploded. We've gone from a handful of clients to touring 30 - 40 authors a month. Big publishing houses make virtual book tours part of their marketing plans, and independent authors know they have to attract an online audience to be successful.
Another change on the virtual book tour scene? E-books. For the first four years, we explained to authors that they needed to make printed copies of their books available for reviewers. Now, I have almost as many bloggers requesting digital versions of books as I do printed ones. Darrell Bain had e-books out for years before the Kindle Fire and color Nook came along. Maureen Fisher's first book, The Jaguar Legacy, was released last year in a Kindle version with a new cover. Both of her books are also available for Nook.
In the spirit of firsts, I am giving away a PDF copy of my first book, Little Shepherd. Obed is in the hills outside Bethlehem when the angels appear to announce the Savior's birth. Can he trust that the miracle of the first Christmas will keep his flock safe while he visits the newborn King?
Please leave a comment with your email address for your chance to win. This is an international giveaway. Winner will be selected by Random.org. Giveaway ends at 11:59 PM Eastern on Sunday, April 22, 2012. You must be 18 years or older to win.
For a complete list of tour stops and giveaways for the Pump Up Your Book's 5th Anniversary Hoedown, please visit us at http://www.pumpupyourbook.com/2012/04/01/pump-up-your-book-5th-year-anniversary-celebration/.
Thanks for the last five years. We hope we'll see you again in another five.

Judging Your Virtual Book Tour's Success
As a virtual book tour coordinator, I often hear from clients or potential clients, "How can I judge my virtual book tour's success?"
One might say, "If I don't sell books, then my VBT was a waste of money." While one of the goals of a VBT is to increase sales, there's a lot more to consider than that.
I wrote an article in October 2010 titled, "Why Virtual Book Tours Work." I discussed the impact my virtual book tour--which was about 4 weeks in when I penned the article--had on my search engine rankings. As I mentioned in that article, a successful VBT will increase your online exposure.
Now, keep in mind that my second VBT ended on January 26, 2011. Yet, when I type "Little Shepherd" into Google, the first result is my book at Amazon.
I also had two results further down on Page 1 and two results on Page 2.
When I type "Little Shepherd" into Bing, the other search engine I use regularly, the 6th result is the book's Amazon page, and there are 2 other results further down the page. The second page also comes up with 1 hit. We directed buyers to Amazon for sales, which sure made a difference. My book hit the Amazon bestsellers list in its category 7 times between September and December 2010. Most of that time, I was on a virtual book tour.
When I type "Cheryl Malandrinos" into Google, the 4th and 6th results are from my VBT and there are 5 hits on the second page.
In Bing, the last 6 results on Page 1 are from my tours and 6 more results appear on Page 2.
If I type "Little Shepherd by Cheryl Malandrinos" into Google or Bing most of the results are also from my VBTs. All these results will help me reach potential readers, and I have my VBTs to thank for it.
While I had several contacts prior to coordinating my own VBT, I've meet several new bloggers as a result of touring with my book. Some have become hosts of Pump Up Your Book because they toured my book first, and others now follow my blogs and I follow theirs.
Networking is an important aspect of a VBT that can't be ignored. The more people you know online, the more people you have the potential to reach online. When your next book comes out, you'll also be able to get in touch with these bloggers again, and maybe get some help promoting that book.
Another way to judge the success of your VBT is whether you come away with a few review blurbs that can be used on your website or added to promotional materials. If you can say, "yes," then you had a good tour.
Virtual book tours, just like any promotional tool, can't guarantee sales. They provide the exposure, the networking, and reviews that you need to get your name and the title of your book noticed.

Short Story at Red Room
In addition to my virtual book tour stop for today, I posted a short story at Red Room.
This is a story I used in a workshop I did with my daughter's class last year. I've tweaked it a bit and submitted it to Red Room's Scandalously Short Story Contest.
I hope you wander out to find "Ramble in the Woods" and let me know what you think of it.
You can find it at http://tinyurl.com/232uer3.

It's Crunch Time!
We're down to the wire. The Little Shepherd Virtual Book Tour is set to kick off on Monday, October 4th. I just handled the last of my to-do items that had to be completed before the tour starts, so now I get to feel a bit anxious over how it will all go. I sometimes feel anxious over my clients' tours--especially ones where I'm fostering a relationship with a new client--but this time the anxiety is more personal.
What if reviewers don't like the book? What if no one comments on my tour stops? What if no one purchases a copy of Little Shepherd over the next two and a half months? How will I juggle being a touring author and coordinating my clients' tours over the next few months? What if I have to spend less time with my girls to make sure everything goes smoothly?
I'm going to pray that all goes well and that my worst concerns don't come true. I would appreciate your prayers too.

Is Book Promotion Overwhelming to Anyone Other Than Me?
Had I known being an author would require me to do so much I might not have bothered.
Okay, that's not true. Writing is like breathing to me and for at least the past 15 years I've wanted to see my name on the front cover of a book--though providing endorsements on back covers of books is nice too.
Over the past month I've certainly gotten a new appreciation for my virtual book tour clients as I prepare for my upcoming virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book.
Let's see, first of all, I had to coordinate my own tour. I guess it should be easy since I already do this for a living, but coordinating a two-and-a-half month tour alongside tours for about a dozen other people isn't exactly a cake walk. My poor Inbox has 51 items in it. Not bad considering many people's Inboxes, but definitely more than my usual one-page list. There are so many emails flying back and forth for my tour and my clients' that it's amazing it can all be kept straight.
Staples and the post office have seen me so much these past few weeks we've considered creating a tunnel from my house to their front doors to save time. When the Staples employees start calling me by my first name, I'll certainly begin to worry.
By the way, do you have any idea how much shipping supplies cost? And just thinking about the amount of money I've spent on postage gives me hives.
I have a notebook that I use to track all ongoing virtual book tours. My tour alone has 75 stops, not including some of the pre-tour buzz I've been making along the way. There are additions, cross-outs, and eraser marks all over the place. My handwriting is horrible--just ask those whose books I've autographed--and trying to decipher my schedule is akin to trying to read the disclaimer at the end of a sweepstakes giveaway that is typed in a 7.5 font.
Since my book's release on August 21st, I don't think a day has gone by that I haven't blogged about it, tweeted it, talked about it on Facebook and my other social networks, or guest blogged somewhere.
The two major things I need to do to get ready for my tour are email the giveaway announcement to all my hosts and post my full tour schedule here. I'll be doing that over the weekend.
Now I understand why big name writers hire people to do all this stuff. It's like a part-time job on top of everything else you're doing.
I hope you've enjoyed my silly ramblings. Honestly, I wouldn't want to be doing anything else right now. I'm thrilled to be a debut author. I know this is just the first of many books my name will appear on (see, I'm not always a pessimist). I love my clients and there are no better bloggers on the face of the planet than those who host Pump Up Your Book's authors.
I know being a touring author is going to make me a better virtual book tour coordinator. I feel very blessed to have this opportunity. God is good!

Guest on Red River Radio - A Good Story is A Good Story
Last night I had the pleasure of being a special guest on the Red River Radio program, A Story is A Good Story, on Blog Talk Radio. Hosts Marsha Cook, Freda Roberts, and Virginia Grenier led an excellent conversation about virtual book tours that I participated in for approximately an hour. We also chatted for a few minutes about Little Shepherd, my first children’s picture book that was released by Guardian Angel Publishing in August.
If you didn’t catch the podcast, you can click here to be directed to the episode page and listen in.
